Media & Cyber Security Commentary
I’m Nicholas O’Sullivan, usually Nick. I work in IT in Townsville and write about cyber security, education technology and the practical constraints facing regional organisations. My interest is in making a technical story understandable without making the evidence sound more certain than it is.

Longer biography
Nicholas O’Sullivan, usually known as Nick, was born and raised in Townsville. His professional background includes operating a local IT support business, working across Queensland state school environments and, since October 2024, working as an IT Manager in an independent school environment.
His experience covers infrastructure planning, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, identity and endpoint management, networking, service delivery and community-sector governance. He holds a Graduate Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) with Distinction from Central Queensland University, a Bachelor of Multimedia Journalism from James Cook University, and ACS Certified Technologist recognition.
Nick’s cyber security capability has developed through hands-on technology work and continuing professional development. His writing connects that experience with public-source research, distinguishing confirmed facts from allegations and explaining what an incident can reasonably tell another organisation about its own readiness.
His North Queensland Cyber Watch series examines incidents with regional connections. His wider research covers cyber security jobs, training pathways, regional coordination and the responsibilities of schools and small organisations. He also provides consulting through Suburban Australia and Suburban Secure, separately from his school employment. That commercial interest is disclosed in his writing.
Topics I can discuss
- Cyber security in Townsville and regional Queensland, including the limits of publicly available incident information.
- School technology, supplier dependencies, cloud governance and the practical responsibilities behind security controls.
- Small business and community organisation readiness, identity, Microsoft 365 and maintainable technology foundations.
- Regional IT careers and training, based on published research and my own professional experience.
- Turning technical findings into questions that boards, school leaders and business owners can act on.
For a developing incident, I can discuss the public record and general implications. Only the affected organisation and its investigators can establish what happened inside its systems.
