ASD's new Essentials: a welcome refresh
I’m excited to see ASD’s new Essentials released. Cyber security is an area I enjoy learning about and putting into practice, and this feels like a much-needed refresh.
What stands out immediately is the simplicity of the principles and the overall design. The structure connects the outcomes an organisation needs to achieve, the actions that support them, and the areas where those actions apply. ASD calls these principles, actions and domains in its framework overview. It’s a clear way to organise a complex subject.
For me, that clarity matters. In schools, businesses and community organisations, good security advice needs to help people understand what they are protecting, why it matters and where to begin. A framework that makes those conversations easier is a welcome development.
These are initial impressions, and I’m looking forward to working through the detail. But I’m pleased with the direction: an understandable structure, with room to reflect the environments organisations actually operate.
I’ve put together a short practical overview at Suburban Secure, including links to ASD’s guidance and what the transition means for organisations already using the Essential Eight.
